I have been meaning to visit Korean restaurant, Wang Dae Bak, for years! It is a highly popular Korean BBQ joint that has been around for ages. As it has stood the test of time, I went with high expectations. The ventilation of WDB was as poor as it could get. It was smoky and we left smelling and feeling like BBQ meat. I was also disappointed to find that the BBQ meat was not exactly of the best quality. Having said that, we were impressed with the non-BBQ items: Kimchi Pancake and Buddae Jiggae (Korean Army Stew). Both of which were the best I had in Singapore thus far. For these alone, I will definitely return to WDB. Although the next time time, I will request to sit outdoors and no BBQ necessary.

We began with good appetizers: mashed potatoes, chilled tofu with preserved veg and candied sweet potatoes.

We got two types of meat: Pork Belly and Boneless Prime rib. Neither were much to shout about…

The Korean Army Stew, Buddae Jiggae ($28), is a must-order here! Packed with loads of delicious junk food especially processed meat like sausages, pork and spam. An extra $3 for cheese topping is highly recommended.

The Kimchi Pancake ($18) was another highlight. Brimming with flavor. Loads of chopped onions, super fragrant and crisp. Perfection.

It may be a shame that for a Korean BBQ restaurant, the meat were of sub-quality but there were plentiful selection of non-BBQ items offered at WDB. I personally can’t wait to return and try more of them.
