Visiting CreatureS was a huge tick off my bucket list and squashed out any FOMO I was suffering from. The picture-perfect restaurant in Jalan Besar is all over social media! Not visiting felt like I wasn’t trendy. Stepping in to CreatureS, the ambience was splendid for a good night out. Food at CreatureS was just like the restaurant décor: stunning. However flavor-wise, do manage expectations here. For the three savoury dishes we had, only one was delicious. The other two were bland or underwhelming. My biggest beef with CreatureS has got to be their completely un-spicy sambal chilli! We were served altogether two different types of chilli paste and neither were spicy hot, not even a tinge spicy. CreatureS’s legendary Durian Cake was another story. It was AMAZING and I am wondering when could be the next opportunity I could order the whole cake…

My friend and I started off with BALI ($20): Pork collar marinated in a balinese style tumeric-based rempah, lightly battered and deep fried, served with a baby sprout and lychee salad. Honestly you could substitute the friend pork collar with chicken and I would not be able to tell the difference. The salad was random and seemed misplaced on the plate…

The most famous dish in CreatureS: AH GONG FRIED CHICKEN & AH MA NOODLES ($23) Crispy fried chicken leg with garam masala, served with chinchalok mayonnaise accompanied by la-mien tossed in fried shallot and light soy. The juicy chicken was fried to perfection! The noodles accompanying it wasn’t outstanding but at least it did not overwhelm the chicken.

This CREATURES CRAYFISH HOKKIEN MEE ($28): Royalty of local fare – fried noodles in rich fragrant prawn broth served with fresh crayfish, tiger prawns and squid, topped with crispy pork lard, Japanese fish roe and home-made sambal belachan (available only on Fridays and weekends) has got to be the prettiest Hokkien Mee I ever had. While the ingredients especially seafood was super fresh, the hokkien mee itself was desperately in need of wok hei. Without it, this was just another fried seafood noodles. If Hokkien Mee is what you are expecting, I would suggest skipping this dish. If seafood noodles is fine with you, go for it. By the way, the sambal chilli was not. spicy. at. all.

CreatureS is super famous for this DURIAN CAKE ($12/slice, $96/whole) Pandan Genoise Sponge + Pandan Vanilla Chantilly Cream + Mao Shan Wang Durian Paste for good reason. It was superbly executed. While the durian pulp was heavy, this was overall a dreamy, light and magical slice of cake.

I had a cocktail and it was really good! GREEN WHITE RED ($16) Pandan-Infused Butterscotch Schnapps + Maple Syrup + Coconut Reduction + Pomegranate. Tasted just like kaya in an alcoholic form, this was delicious and I finished every last drop of it.

At CreatureS, some dishes are significantly better than others. But I will still encourage you to not go with high expectations and research, research and research about the exact dishes to order.
